The Poteau Chamber of Commerce hosts several events throughout the year. Many of these events draw visitors, helping bring tourism dollars into the city by driving revenue for area businesses such as lodging, restaurants and convenience stores.
In February, we kick off the year with our Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet. It’s always lots of fun as over 500 of Poteau’s Business Owners and employees gather together for a night of fun and excitement. With a live and silent auction, you are sure to see a little bit of everything from the goods that Poteau and the surrounding area offers.
In April, the City Wide Trash-off Day is done in conjunction each year with the Oklahoma State Wide Trash Off Day. Area businesses, residents and families come together to help Poteau become an even more beautiful place, trophies are given out and everyone leaves knowing they’ve done a great job in helping keep our community clean. Each year in addition to the trash off, we hold a poster contest with the 4th graders encouraging them to get creative in “keeping Poteau beautiful.”
And as summer nears, many are looking to get fit. May offers the annual 8k Cavanal Killer – an intense walk/run to the top of Cavanal, “the World’s Highest Hill”. This event is one that is challenging yet rewarding. The Cavanal Killer is an intense climb that will have you gaining a 1500 feet incline in just 5 miles; the average grade is 8%, with some sections tilting upward at 14%.
In late June, we have the Annual Chamber Golf Classic. Two man teams are paired together for lots of fun and a great networking opportunity.
July is always lots of fun with the free Annual 4th of July Celebration held at the parking lot of the Donald W. Reynolds Convention Center. With free activities such as water slides, games, activities, live music, and dancing, and Lots of Fun for the entire family; concessions are available and the City puts on one of the best fireworks display around (weather permitting) at dark. This is one event you want to be sure to attend! Let’s not forget about the Phil Gardenhire Memorial Rodeo. In 2015 the Phil Gardenhire Memorial Rodeo received an award for the “Best New IPRA Rodeo” in the country.
October is a great time to visit the area for some beautiful fall foliage and the Poteau Balloon Fest! During the Balloon Fest, hot air balloon fill the skies using the mountains and surrounding terrain of fall colors as a backdrop for a picture perfect family fun vacation. With thrilling entertainment and carnival rides, there’s always something for everyone to do and see at the Poteau Balloon Festival!
As the weather cools in November, we help with the Annual Veterans Day Parade and to end the year, it’s always fun to join us for the Annual Christmas Parade, always the first Saturday in December, weather permitting. It’s at Dark so many of the floats are lit up and each year offering a different theme. Also in December is Lights on the Island at Quarry Island, Wister Lake State Park, a drive through light display at Wister Lake with new displays added each year. This year, we are adding a “Holiday Dash @ Wister Lake.” This will be a fun run/walk that will be held starting at 6:00 pm with the course going through the Lights on the Island display.
